Wow, what a way to close out 2024. In a year that’s seen assassination attempts, war, and controversy, the killing of United Healthcare’s CEO still sits comfortably at the top of the list.
Accused of carrying out the assassination, as if out of a plot from an old Italian mafia movie, is Luigi Mangione. Luigi was apparently caught more or less red handed when a McDonald’s worker recognized his face and “snitched” by calling the police on him. It’s been reported that he was carrying a manifesto about the corruption of corporations and healthcare, a weapon that matched the suspect’s, and a matching fake id used by the suspect.
How convenient for law enforcement.
Arguably the most interesting part of this whole situation is they raging public support for the killers actions though. People from all races, genders, economic and social backgrounds are publicly voicing their support for his actions and justification. Many argue that the CEO deserved it. On the other hand, many argue that a personal vendetta is not enough to justify the murder of a morally corrupt, but otherwise innocent man.
What are your thoughts? Is Luigi a modern day Robinhood? Or is he just another person committing acts of violence?
